It is the largest news network serving the Middle East and North Africa region. The channel is part of the Al Jazeera Media Network, which also operates Al Jazeera English. This network is significant because it provides an alternative to local state-owned broadcasters. For many years, it has been known for its journalistic professionalism and for hosting a wide range of viewpoints. This unique approach has given the network great credibility and influence in regional affairs.

The network began with a very specific development process. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the then-Emir of Qatar, first proposed an international news channel in August 1994. On February 8, 1996, the channel was officially founded by an emiri decree as a state-owned entity. When the network finally launched on November 1, 1996, it initially offered only six hours of programming per day. By the end of 1997, this increased to twelve hours. On January 1, 1999, the network reached a major milestone by beginning 24-hour daily broadcasting.

Operating a global news network requires a complex system of people and locations. To find stories, the network uses many bureaus, which are local offices located in different parts of the world. At one point, the network had 23 bureaus and 70 foreign correspondents. In total, the network employed about 450 journalists. By the time of the Iraq War, the staff had grown to between 1,300 and 1,400 employees. These journalists work to gather news from distant locations to share with a massive global audience.

Financial support has played a vital role in the network's history. The founder provided a loan-turned-grant of approximately $137 million to cover the first five years of operations. In the years that followed, he continued to cover annual losses of more than $100 million. The network also generates money through advertising and by charging fees to other networks for its news feed. This financial structure allowed the network to expand its reach even when it faced economic challenges or political pressure.

Al Jazeera has a long history of being at the center of major world events. During the war in Afghanistan, the network gained significant attention in the West. Because it had opened a bureau in Kabul before the war began, it had better access to film events than many other networks. Sometimes, other media organizations even paid up to $250,000 for Al Jazeera's exclusive video clips. The network also provided extensive coverage during the Iraq War and the 2010s Arab Spring protests.

Because of its influential content, the network has often faced intense opposition. Some neighboring governments have attempted to silence it through various methods. For example, Egypt banned the channel in 2013, and Bahrain temporarily banned it in 2010. In 1999, the Algerian government reportedly cut power to several cities to censor a specific talk show. During the 2017 Qatar diplomatic crisis, several countries demanded that Qatar shut down the network entirely. These actions were often described by media rights organizations as attempts to limit press freedom.

The network's impact can be seen in its massive viewership numbers. By the year 2000, it was estimated that 35 million people watched the channel nightly. This made it the top news source in the Arab world, ranking ahead of the Middle East Broadcasting Centre and Arab News Network. Its ability to reach such a large audience has made it a powerful diplomatic tool for Qatar. This connection between media reach and political influence shows how important news networks are in modern international relations.
