Euronews is a pan-European television news network that provides livestreamed news from a European perspective.

Headquartered in Lyon, France, the network serves as a major information provider for a global audience. Viewers in Europe and North Africa can access the channel via satellite. Most people around the world watch Euronews through its website, YouTube, or mobile devices. The network plays a vital role in how international events are interpreted through a European lens.

The network operates using a "glocal" strategy to reach diverse audiences. This approach combines global news coverage with local relevance. In May 2017, Euronews split its services into twelve separate language editions. This allowed editorial teams to personalize content for specific regions. They share original content while producing stories that matter to local viewers. Some language editions use local reporters and presenters to increase familiarity. Certain channels, such as the German-language edition, utilize satellite feeds. Other services, like the Arabic and Persian editions, moved to online-only distribution via websites and social media. This digital shift often involves using a fiber-optic IP uplink to transmit data.

Euronews began its journey in response to the changing media landscape of the early 1990s. Following the Persian Gulf War, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) wanted a news source that offered a European viewpoint. This was a response to the dominance of CNN in 24-hour news. A consortium of ten national public broadcasters, known as SOCEMIE, founded the network. This group included broadcasters from Cyprus, Egypt, France, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Monaco, Finland, and Switzerland. The city of Lyon was selected as the headquarters after competing against Munich, Bologna, and Valencia. The inaugural broadcast took place on January 1, 1993, in Écully, Lyon.

The ownership and partnership structure of Euronews has evolved significantly over three decades. In 1997, the British broadcaster ITN purchased a 49% share for £5.1 million. In 2001, the Russian company VGTRK acquired a 1.8% stake. By 2009, the Turkish broadcaster TRT became a major partner with a 15.70% stake. A major shift occurred in 2015 when Media Globe Networks, owned by Naguib Sawiris, acquired a 53% controlling stake. This ownership change led to a new headquarters in Lyon. The new complex covers 10,000 square meters and was designed by the firm Jakob + MacFarlane.

In 2017, a significant strategic partnership was formed with NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News. NBCUniversal purchased a 25% stake in the network for €25 million, or approximately $30 million. This partnership, known as Euronews NBC, allowed for increased cooperation in content and operations. To prevent the "Americanization" of the network, the European Commission approved the deal with specific protections. The SOCEMIE members maintained editorial control by holding seven slots on the editorial board. In contrast, Media Globe Networks held three slots, and NBC News held only one. This structure ensured that Euronews teams retained full control over their editorial direction.

The network has expanded its programming to include various presenter-led formats. In 2018, Euronews began a major revamp of its daily schedule. This included the launch of "Good Morning Europe," a five-hour weekday morning show. Belle Donati has served as a main anchor for this program.

Another major addition was "Euronews Now," a six-hour breaking news program. The network also introduced "Raw Politics," a show focused on political issues from Brussels. This show even featured a spin-off called "Raw Politics: Your Call," where viewers could interact with European Parliament members. These shows were designed to complement traditional rolling news and debate programming.

Euronews serves as a complex intersection of media technology, international politics, and linguistic diversity. It demonstrates how a single news organization can manage multiple languages and distribution methods simultaneously. From its origins as a small consortium of ten broadcasters, it has grown into a massive digital and satellite entity. The network's ability to balance international partnerships with local editorial independence is a central part of its identity. By utilizing various platforms, from satellite to fiber-optic networks, Euronews connects different parts of the world through a shared European perspective.
