It is owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, or IRIB. This group is the only one allowed to send radio and TV signals inside Iran. Press TV broadcasts news in two languages: English and French. The channel works 24 hours every day. It has its main headquarters in the city of Tehran. The network reaches many parts of the world. This includes North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and parts of Africa and Latin America.

The channel works to show a specific view of the world. It was created to give a different perspective on news. The leaders of the channel wanted to offer an alternative to Western news groups. They wanted to show news about Middle Eastern affairs from an Iranian view. They aimed to reach people who they felt were seeing misinformation. The network focuses on hard topics in the Middle East. One example is the occupation of Iraq by the United States. The channel uses news, images, and arguments to reach its global audience.

Press TV began its work in 2007. Its website launched in late January of that year. The actual TV channel started on July 2, 2007. It was launched to compete with Western services like BBC World News and CNN. In 2009, the station had more than 400 workers around the world. The annual budget for the channel was 250 billion rials. This was worth more than 8.3 million US dollars at that time. The network even had a news editor and chief correspondent based in London.

Many people have criticized how Press TV handles the truth. Some say it is an outlet for Iranian government propaganda. Propaganda is information used to promote a specific political view. Critics say the channel shows views that match the Iranian government's message. Some reports say the channel has published intentional errors. For example, a story once claimed a camp in Lebanon was a US military base. There is no evidence for that claim. In 2012, a commentator called the station a propaganda channel for the government.

There are also very serious concerns about the content on the channel. Some groups say the station shares antisemitic ideas. Antisemitism involves unfair or hateful views toward Jewish people. The channel has also been accused of Holocaust denial. This means claiming that the Holocaust did not happen as history shows. Some people say the channel has shown forced confessions. This is when a person is made to say things in an interview while they are in prison. Journalist Maziar Bahari said he was forced to give a confession under threat. These are heavy and serious topics that people study closely.
