Acteon Group

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Acteon Group is a small set of islands. They sit in the far southeast of the Tuamotu atoll group. This area is part of French Polynesia. You can find them east-southeast of Tahiti.

These islands are atolls. An atoll is a ring of coral in the sea. Most of these islands are very isolated. There are almost no people living there.

The group is made of four specific atolls. Their names are Matureivavao, Tenararo, Tenarunga, and Vahanga. These atolls are relatively small in size. Most of these places have no permanent residents. Only the atoll of Tenarunga has people who live there.

The islands are part of the commune of Gambier. This is how the area is managed today.

People first saw these islands a long time ago. Pedro Fernández de Quirós saw them in 1605. He was part of a Spanish expedition. He said the atolls had coconut palms on them.

Other people in his group gave the islands many names. They called them "The Four Sisters" or "The Four Crowned." Later, Thomas Ebrill found them again in 1833. He was the captain of a ship called the Amphitrite.

Many things have happened to the islands since then. In 1932, a court said the government owned them. In 1983, a big storm hit the area. This storm was named Severe Tropical Cyclone Nano.

In 1953, the government tried to develop the atolls. They gave land to two companies for ten years. This period of use was later extended. In 1975 and 1979, the atolls were transferred permanently.

Today, there is a big disagreement about the islands. The ownership of the atolls is uncertain. In March 2021, the Catholic Mission of Tahiti claimed they owned them.

This led to protests from the families of the original owners. In January 2023, two people were taken into custody. They were accused of fraud by prosecutors. As of January 2024, the legal case is still not finished.
