He was born on November 13, 1866, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the sixth child in a family of nine. His parents, Ester and Moritz Flexner, were immigrants from Germany. Flexner was the first in his family to finish high school. He later earned a degree in classics from Johns Hopkins University in 1886. He also studied psychology at Harvard and in Berlin. These experiences shaped his ideas about how schools should work.

Flexner believed that schools should focus on the whole person. He started an experimental private school in Louisville to test this. This school was very different from most others. It did not use traditional grades or standard tests. There were no strict academic records for the students. Instead, he used small learning groups and hands-on work. Students from his school were soon accepted into many top colleges. This success showed that his new way of teaching could work.

In 1908, Flexner wrote a book called The American College. He used this book to criticize how universities worked. He thought that big lectures were not the best way to teach. He felt that research sometimes took too much focus away from teaching. This book caught the eye of the Carnegie Foundation. They asked him to study medical schools in the United States and Canada. Even though he was not a doctor, he was chosen for his strong writing. He wanted to find ways to make medical training much better.

In 1910, he published the famous Flexner Report. This report changed the way doctors were trained forever. It led to much higher quality for many physicians. Most doctors now need at least six to eight years of study. However, the report also caused harm. It led to the closing of many medical schools for Black students. It also closed five out of seven African-American medical colleges. These changes were based on his views on germ theory and health.

Flexner continued to help great thinkers throughout his life. In 1930, he helped start the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He served as its leader until 1939. This place brought together some of the smartest people in history. He helped many scientists escape danger in Europe. This included the famous scientist Albert Einstein, who arrived in 1933. Flexner died in 1959 at the age of 92. His work left a lasting mark on how we study science and medicine today.
