He worked in many different fields of study. He was a philosopher, a psychologist, and an educational reformer. His main idea was a deep belief in democracy. He felt democracy was a great goal for all people. To Dewey, democracy was more than just a way to vote. It was a way for people to talk and share ideas. This helps a society work well together. He believed that schools and society needed to change to help people think better.

He was a leader in a way of thinking called pragmatism. He also helped start a way of studying the mind called functional psychology. In 1896, he wrote a famous paper about the "reflex arc." This paper helped start a new school of psychology in Chicago. He also believed in something called Rational Empiricism. This means using reason and experience to understand things. He thought people should learn by doing things in the real world.

Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont, on October 20, 1859.

His parents were Archibald Sprague Dewey and Lucina Artemisia Rich Dewey. He had an older brother named Davis Rich Dewey. Dewey went to the University of Vermont to study. He graduated in 1879 with high honors. Later, he earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1884. Before he became a famous professor, he taught in small towns. He taught in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, Vermont.

Throughout his life, Dewey held many important jobs.

He taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago. At Chicago, he started the Laboratory Schools to test his teaching ideas. He also taught at Columbia University for many years. Dewey was very busy writing and sharing his thoughts. He wrote about 40 books and over 700 articles. Some of his most famous books include "Democracy and Education" and "Art as Experience." He even served as president of two big groups. He was the president of the American Psychological Association in 1899. He was also the president of the American Philosophical Association in 1905.

Dewey's ideas traveled far beyond the United States.

In 1919, he and his wife traveled to Japan. During this trip, he also visited China for two years. Many people in China came to hear him speak. They called him "Mr. Democracy" and "the American Confucius." He gave nearly 200 lectures to large crowds in China. He told Chinese educators not to just copy Western schools. Instead, he wanted them to create their own systems. His work helped many people think about how to live in a modern world.
