He was a philosopher, a psychologist, and an educational reformer. His work spanned many different subjects. He wrote about logic, ethics, aesthetics, and social theory. The overriding theme of his life was a profound belief in democracy. To Dewey, democracy was more than a political system of voting. He believed it was an ethical ideal for all humanity. This ideal required communication between citizens, experts, and politicians. He felt this process created a fully formed public opinion.

Dewey helped develop several major ways of thinking. He was a primary figure in the philosophy of pragmatism. This approach emphasizes practical consequences and experience. He was also a founder of functional psychology. In 1896, he published "The Reflex Arc Concept in Psychology." This paper is considered the first major work of the functionalist school in Chicago. He also developed a belief in Rational Empiricism. This involves using reason and experience to understand the world. His work in psychology was highly influential. A 2002 survey ranked him as the 93rd-most-cited psychologist of the twentieth century.

His career involved many academic roles and institutions. Dewey earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1884. He later taught at the University of Michigan from 1884 to 1894. In 1894, he joined the newly founded University of Chicago. There, he worked on his "Studies in Logical Theory."

He also started the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He used these schools to test his progressive ideas about teaching. After leaving Chicago, he taught at Teachers College at Columbia University. He held this position from 1904 until his retirement in 1930. He also served as president of the American Psychological Association in 1899. Later, he became president of the American Philosophical Association in 1905.

Dewey was an incredibly prolific writer. He published approximately 40 books and over 700 articles.

His book "Democracy and Education" (1916) is a famous work on progressive education. He wrote "Human Nature and Conduct" (1922) to study how habits affect behavior. In 1927, he published "The Public and its Problems." This book defended democracy against certain social critiques. He also explored art in his 1934 book, "Art as Experience." Another major work was "Logic: The Theory of Inquiry," published in 1938. His book "Experience and Nature" (1925) was his most metaphysical statement. He even explored religion in his 1934 book, "A Common Faith."

His ideas reached a global scale through his travels. In 1919, Dewey and his wife traveled to Japan. This trip led him to visit China, where he stayed for two years.

During this time, he gave nearly 200 lectures to Chinese audiences. Many people attended his talks, with crowds sometimes reaching thousands. Because of his focus on modern values, many called him "Mr. Democracy." Others referred to him as "the American Confucius." He encouraged Chinese educators to use pragmatism to build their own school systems. He advised them not to simply import Western models. However, the political situation in China made it hard to implement his suggestions.

Dewey's influence on education was transformative. He believed schools and civil society needed reconstruction. He wanted to encourage experimental intelligence and plurality.

He argued that education should be tied to practical problems. This includes the problems of civic cooperation and useful living. He believed that learning should happen through experience. This approach is often called progressive education. He wanted students to engage with the real world. This method helps prepare people for life in a democratic society. His work helped shape how many modern schools operate today.

Even within his own work, Dewey continued to evolve. He was not always satisfied with his previous conclusions. For example, he later considered changing the title of "Experience and Nature." He suggested it might be better titled "Culture and Nature."

He also wrote about the roots of fascism in "Freedom and Culture" (1939). His work remained relevant to many different fields of study. He connected philosophy to sociology, politics, and psychology. This broad reach is why scholars still study him today. One writer noted that Dewey was like Aristotle to the modern age. He was not just a philosopher, but "the" philosopher of his time.
