James Harvey Robinson was a very important scholar of history. He wanted to change how we look at the past. He helped start a way of thinking called "New History." This idea was different from old ways of learning. Instead of just looking at kings or wars, he looked at people. He studied how society and science helped humans grow. He believed history could help us solve problems in our own time.

Robinson's way of learning worked by looking at many different things. He looked at social and intellectual progress. This means he studied how people's ideas and ways of living changed over time. He did not just focus on political events. He wanted to see how science and culture shaped the world. This helped history connect to other subjects like social science. It made the study of the past much broader.

James was born on June 29, 1863, in Bloomington, Illinois. His father was a bank president named James Harvey Robinson. James went to Harvard University to study. He earned his A.B. in 1887 and his M.A. in 1888. Then, he traveled to Europe to learn even more. He studied at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Freiburg. He earned his Ph.D. in 1890 at Freiburg.

He had a very busy career as a teacher and writer. In 1891, he taught history at the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Columbia University in 1895 to be a professor. Some teachers left Columbia because of fights over academic freedom. Because of this, James left Columbia in May 1919. He helped found the New School for Social Research. He served as its very first director. In 1929, he became President of the American Historical Association.

James wrote many famous books during his life. One book was called "An Introduction to the History of Western Europe." It was published in 1902 and changed how students learned. Another book was "The Mind in the Making." It came out in 1921 and became a bestseller. This book said that freedom of thought is needed for progress. He also wrote a book called "The Human Comedy" after he died. He died of a heart attack in Manhattan in 1936.
