His father was a man who did many jobs. He was a farmer, a contractor, and a banker. Charles grew up working on the family farm. He later went to DePauw University and graduated in 1898. He also studied at Oxford University in England. These many years of learning helped him become a great teacher.

Beard spent much of his career at Columbia University. He joined the school as a lecturer in 1904. He worked in many different departments there. He taught history and also taught politics. He even coached the debate team for students. He wrote many books and articles for magazines. One of his books was a helpful collection of essays. It was called An Introduction to the English Historians. This book was a new kind of tool for students.

One of his most famous books caused big arguments. It was called An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. He published this book in 1913. Beard had a very special way of looking at history. He believed that money and business changed how leaders acted. He thought the Founding Fathers were moved by economics. He saw a split between business interests and farmers. This idea was called progressive historiography.

Beard was a man who stood by his beliefs. In 1917, he resigned from Columbia University. He did this to support the First World War. He felt he could not support the war while working for the school. Later, he became an independent scholar. He made money from his many bestselling books. One was called The Rise of American Civilization. He also helped start the New School for Social Research. He even visited Japan to help plan for Tokyo.

Many people still talk about Beard's ideas today. During the Cold War, some people stopped using his methods. A historian named Richard Hofstadter called his reputation a ruin in 1968. However, interest in his work came back later. People began to study his ideas about foreign policy again. He died on September 1, 1948, in Connecticut. He was buried with his wife, Mary. Their lives changed how we study the American past.
