His father was a farmer and a banker.

Charles studied at many schools. He went to Oxford University in England. Later, he taught at Columbia University. He wrote many books about the past. One book was very famous. It was about the United States Constitution. Beard thought money changed how leaders acted. He believed rich people used the law to help themselves. This idea was very new. It caused many big arguments among experts.

Beard also cared about how people lived. He helped start a school for workers. He wanted learning to be easy for everyone. During World War I, he left his job at Columbia. He did this to speak out for his views. Later in life, he did not want the U.S. to join World War II. He thought it was better to stay out of foreign wars. He died in 1948. People still study his ideas today.
