He was born in London in 1910. As a child, he had trouble with his legs. He went to a special school for this. Later, he studied at the London School of Economics. He also studied at the University of Chicago.

Coase had big ideas about how markets work. He wrote about why companies exist. He said that trading has costs. We call these transaction costs. These costs include the work of finding goods or making deals. Because of these costs, it is often better to have a firm. A firm is a business that hires people to work.

He also wrote about rules and property.

He used a story about a rancher and a farmer. The rancher's cows might eat the farmer's crops. Coase showed how clear rules help people solve these problems. In 1991, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Coase lived a very long life. He was 102 years old when he died in 2013. He was married to his wife, Marian, for 75 years.
