Richard Hofstadter was a famous historian. He lived from 1916 to 1970. He was born in Buffalo, New York. He taught at Columbia University. This is a very big school in New York City.

Richard wrote many books about the past. He studied how people think and act. He used ideas from psychology to explain history. He looked at how fear and anxiety change politics. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for his writing. These are very special awards for authors.

One book he wrote was about the American political tradition. It looked at twelve major leaders. He showed that leaders often have many sides. Another book was about anti-intellectualism. This is when people are afraid of smart ideas or big cities.
