He spent his life studying ancient civilizations. He was the very first American to earn a PhD in Egyptology. This is the study of ancient Egypt and its people. He worked at the University of Chicago for many years. He even led the Haskell Oriental Museum there. His work helped people understand how early societies grew. He wanted to save old writings before they disappeared forever.

Breasted had a very busy career in many countries. He studied the Egyptian language under a teacher named Adolf Erman. In 1894, he earned his doctorate with a thesis about sun hymns. He moved to Chicago to teach at the university. From 1899 to 1908, he did fieldwork in Egypt. This work made him very well known in his field. He also wrote a big book called History of Egypt in 1905. He was the first person in the United States to hold a professor chair in Egyptology.

One of his biggest dreams came true in 1919. He wanted to build a special place for research. He called it the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. To get money for it, he wrote to John D. Rockefeller Jr. Rockefeller gave $50,000 over five years to help. The university also gave its own support to the project.

Breasted went on a massive trip to find new things. He traveled with four students from 1919 to 1920. They sailed from Chicago to England and then to Egypt. They also visited places like Bombay and Mesopotamia. During this time, he met many important people. He met the leader Faisal, who later became the king of Iraq. He also met famous scholars like Howard Carter. Breasted bought many items for museums, including a mummy named Meresamun. He even helped during the search for King Tutankhamun's tomb.

It shows how ancient people treated injuries and even understood the brain. Breasted died in New York City in 1935. He died from a streptococcus infection.
