He was a Czech linguist and an orientalist. An orientalist is someone who studies the history and languages of many Eastern lands. Hrozný spent his life studying how people wrote and spoke long ago. He is most famous for solving the mystery of the Hittite language. This work helped create a new field called Hittitology. This field is the study of the Hittite people and their culture. His discoveries allowed us to finally hear the voices of people from thousands of years ago.

To solve the mystery, Hrozný used a clever way of comparing words.

He looked at a sentence written in cuneiform, which is a way of writing with wedge shapes. He saw the word NINDA and knew it meant bread. He then looked at the word watar. This word looked very much like the English word water. He also saw the word eku, which reminded him of the Latin word aqua for water. By matching these old words to modern ones, he realized the Hittites spoke an Indo-European language. This was a huge breakthrough for history.

In 1925, he led a team to the Turkish village of Kültepe. They found 1,000 cuneiform tablets containing letters from merchants. He also worked at Charles University in Prague for many years. From 1919 to 1952, he was a professor there. In 1939, he served as the rector, a top leader of the university.

Hrozný was a brave person during difficult times. In 1939, during the German occupation, he helped his students. He told German officers they had no legal right to take students from the university. This showed his great courage. Later in life, he tried to read other old scripts from India and Crete. He also suffered a stroke in 1944, which ended his scientific work. He died in 1952, but his work remains vital today. We still use his discoveries to understand the ancient past.
