He was a philosopher, a diplomat, and a leader in education. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1862, he grew up in a family with hardworking people. His father, Henry Butler, worked in manufacturing. Nicholas studied very hard at Columbia College. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1882, his master's degree in 1883, and his doctorate in 1884. He was so successful that President Theodore Roosevelt called him "Nicholas Miraculous." This nickname showed how much people respected his many achievements.

Butler spent much of his life working to grow Columbia University.

He became the acting president in 1901 and the formal president in 1902. He led the university for 43 years, which was the longest time in its history. During his time, he added many new buildings and departments to the campus. He even helped create the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. This was the first academic medical center in the whole world. Because he did so much for the school, many places at Columbia were named after him. This includes the Butler Library and a special prize for philosophy.

While he helped schools grow, Butler also worked for world peace.

He helped convince Andrew Carnegie to give $10 million to start the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Butler served as the president of this group from 1925 to 1945. His work to promote peace helped him win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. He also helped lead efforts to restore the University of Leuven after its library was burned during World War I. He believed that international communication could help prevent many hard conflicts.

However, Butler's life also included many choices that people found wrong or unfair. In 1919, he created a rule to limit how many Jewish students could attend Columbia. This was the first time an American college used such a quota. Because of this, many people called him an anti-semite. He also had views on government that were very controversial. In 1931, he said that some systems had stronger leaders than elections. He was also an admirer of the Italian leader Benito Mussolini. These views made many people disagree with his ideas about how a country should be run.

Butler was a very busy man who was involved in politics and many clubs.

He was a delegate for the Republican Party for many years. In 1912, he was even named to replace a candidate in a presidential election. He also worked to end Prohibition, which was a law that banned certain drinks. In his later years, Butler became almost completely blind in 1945. He died in 1947 and was buried in a cemetery in New Jersey. Even though people had different opinions of him, his impact on history was very large.
