Zosterophylls were a group of early land plants. They first appeared during the Silurian period. These plants lived all over the world.

They were among the first vascular plants. Vascular plants are plants with tubes to move water. These tubes were in the center of their stems. Some zosterophylls lived in wet, boggy ground. Other types may have lived in shallow water. This is because their lower stems lacked stomata. Stomata are tiny openings that help a plant breathe. The upper parts of the plants had these openings.

Zosterophyll stems had many shapes. Some were smooth. Others had small spines called enations. The tips of the stems grew by unrolling. This way of growing is called circinate vernation.

These plants had kidney-shaped parts called sporangia. These parts held spores. The sporangia grew on the sides of the stems. They would split open to let the spores out. Scientists think zosterophylls are related to lycophytes. Lycophytes are a group of plants that live today. We can find fossils of these plants in Arctic Canada.
