Zosterophylls were a group of extinct land plants. They first appeared during the Silurian period. These plants were some of the very first vascular plants. Vascular plants have special tubes to move water through their bodies.

Because they had these tubes, they could live on land. They were found all over the world. Some fossils have even been found on Bathurst Island in Arctic Canada.

These plants had a very interesting way of growing. Their stems could be smooth or covered in small spines called enations. The tips of the stems grew by unrolling. This way of growing is called circinate vernation.

The stems had a central column for moving water. This column had a specific structure called exarch protoxylem. The plants also had kidney-shaped parts called sporangia. These sporangia grew on the sides of the stems. They would split open to release spores.

Scientists have worked hard to name and group these plants. In 1917, researchers named a group called Psilophyta. Later, a scientist named Banks changed how we look at them. In 1968, he established the subdivision Zosterophyllophytina. By 1975, he split the Psilophyta into three different groups.

Other scientists like Kenrick and Crane studied them in 1997. They helped show how these plants relate to others. This helps us understand how plant life changed over time.

There are many different types of zosterophylls. One famous type is called Zosterophyllum. This name comes from a mistake about a water plant called Zostera. Some fossils show that these plants lived in wet places. For example, Zosterophyllum rhenanum might have lived in water. We think this because the lower parts lacked stomata. Stomata are tiny openings that help plants breathe.

The upper parts of the stems did have these openings. This suggests they lived in boggy ground or shallow water.

Zosterophylls are like distant relatives to plants we see today. Scientists believe they are related to lycophytes. Lycophytes are a group of living plants. The zosterophylls are often called a stem-group. This means they are part of the family tree that leads to modern lycophytes.

By studying these fossils, we see how the first land plants began to grow. They paved the way for the green world we know now.
