It sits right at the mouth of the Casamance River. The city is the capital of the Ziguinchor Region. It is also the main town for the Casamance area. One interesting thing is its location. The country of The Gambia sits between Ziguinchor and the north of Senegal. This makes the city feel almost separated from the rest of its country. It is the eighth largest city in Senegal. As of the 2023 census, it has 214,874 people living there.

The weather in Ziguinchor is very different from the north of Senegal. While the north is often dry, Ziguinchor has a tropical savanna climate. This is caused by the West African Monsoon. The city has hot winters that see no rain at all. The summers are warm and very wet.

In fact, the annual rainfall here is more than three times what falls in Dakar. This extra water helps the land stay green and supports many types of plants. The environment is perfect for growing many different things.

People have been living and trading here for a very long time. The city was once part of the Bainuk kingdom of Bichangor. There are different ideas about where the name Ziguinchor comes from. One story says it comes from a Portuguese phrase. It means "I came and they cry." This refers to how local people felt when they first saw European traders. Another idea is that the name comes from the Bainuk language. It might mean "places to go are finished" or "place of several fields."

History shows that many different groups have shaped the city. The Portuguese arrived and built a settlement in 1645. Later, the French took control of the area in 1888. Under French rule, the city became a major port for trade. They encouraged people to grow groundnuts, which are a type of peanut.

This changed the way people farmed the land. While rice was the traditional crop, groundnuts became very important for the economy. Today, the city is a melting pot of many ethnic groups like the Jola, Wolof, and Mandinka.

Ziguinchor is still a busy hub for moving goods and people.

The city also has an airport and a ferry terminal. The ferry is a very important link to the rest of Senegal. The new ferry is named after a local hero, Aline Sitoe Diatta. Visitors also enjoy the nearby beaches at Cap Skirring. The city is full of life, from its historic buildings to its many markets.
