The land here feels very different from other parts of Senegal. It is a low-lying area that stays quite hot. Most of the region has a tropical savanna climate. This means it gets much more rain than the rest of the country. From November to May, there is almost no rain at all. However, the rainy season arrives from June to October. During this time, most places get over 1,000 mm of rain. Some areas in the southwest get as much as 2,000 mm.

History tells us that the name Casamance has interesting roots. One idea is that it comes from the Manding phrase Kasa mansa. This phrase means "King of Kasa." It refers to the historical Kingdom of Kasa. Portuguese traders used the name Casamansa when they visited the area. Later, the French changed it to the modern name we use today. The Jola and Bainuk people have lived here for over a thousand years.

People in Casamance use the land in many ways. Rice farming is a very important part of the economy. Many visitors also come for tourism to see the beautiful beaches. Cap Skirring is a very famous place for these beaches. However, the trees in the area face a hard job. Illegal logging is a big threat to the tree cover. A group called the MFDC also started a movement in 1982. This led to a conflict with the government that began in 1990.
