Zheng He's life changed when he was a young boy. In 1381, the Ming army conquered the area where he lived. Ma He was taken prisoner by the Ming forces. He was placed in the service of a man named Zhu Di. Zhu Di was the Prince of Yan at that time. Ma He served as a soldier on the northern frontier. He helped the prince during many military campaigns. Eventually, he earned the deep trust of the prince.

When Zhu Di became the Yongle Emperor, he promoted Ma He. He gave him the name Zheng He in 1404. Zheng He then helped lead seven massive treasure voyages. These trips happened between 1405 and 1433. The emperor wanted to show China's power to the world. He also wanted to grow trade with other lands. Zheng He was the commander in charge of these huge fleets.

The first fleet left in 1405 with 317 ships. It carried almost 28,000 crew members. Some of the largest ships were very long. They had four decks and held hundreds of sailors. The fleet traveled through the Indian Ocean. They visited places like India, Arabia, and the Swahili coast of Africa. Zheng He gave gifts like silk, porcelain, and gold. In return, he brought back camels, ivory, and zebras.

He even brought back a giraffe from Malindi.

Zheng He's travels helped connect many different parts of the world. His ships followed old trade paths used for a long time. These paths linked China to the Arabian Peninsula. By traveling these routes, his fleet helped build trade networks. These networks stretched all the way from China to Africa. Even today, people remember his great journeys. His story shows how much people can explore the wide ocean.
