His leadership was vital to the success of the Ming navy.

The treasure voyages were massive undertakings of organization and scale. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He commanded seven major expeditions. The first voyage departed in July 1405 with 317 ships. This fleet carried nearly 28,000 crew members. The ships were enormous, with some being twice as long as any other wooden ships. They featured four decks to accommodate hundreds of sailors. The Ming government even established a foreign language institute in Nanjing to prepare for these trips.

These voyages served several important political and economic purposes. The Yongle Emperor wanted to establish a Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean. He aimed to expand the imperial tributary system. This system involved foreign states giving gifts to the Emperor to show respect.

Zheng He traveled to places like Brunei, Java, Siam, and India. He also visited the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. The fleet exchanged Chinese silk, porcelain, and gold for foreign goods. They brought back exotic animals like zebras, camels, and ivory. One famous arrival was a giraffe from Malindi, which was seen as a qilin.

Zheng He's journeys connected many different cultures and systems. Although his ships were unprecedented, he followed well-established trade routes. These routes had linked China to Arabia since the Han dynasty. By using these paths, he strengthened existing maritime networks. His expeditions helped integrate the Indian Ocean into a larger global trade web. Even after his death, the impact of his travels remained.
