A sailor named Magellan led a big trip.

Ferdinand Magellan was a skilled sailor from Portugal.

Ferdinand Magellan was a famous explorer from Portugal.

Magellan first asked the King of Portugal for help. King Manuel I said no to the plan. Magellan then went to King Charles I of Spain. The Spanish king said yes to the idea. Magellan became an admiral for the Spanish fleet. He organized a group of five ships for the trip. This group was called the Armada of Molucca.
The voyage began in September 1519. The fleet sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. They reached the coast of South America. The crew had to face many hard jobs. Some sailors tried to take control of the ships. This is called a mutiny. Magellan worked hard to stop the mutiny. Eventually, they found a narrow path through the land. This path is called the Strait of Magellan. It led them into a very calm sea. Magellan named this sea the Pacific Ocean.
The journey continued across the huge Pacific Ocean. The crew eventually reached the Philippines. On 27 April 1521, Magellan died in a battle there. After he died, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command. Elcano led the remaining ships toward the Spice Islands. One ship named the Victoria sailed west. It went through the Indian Ocean and around Africa. The ship finally returned to Spain in September 1522.
This trip was very important for history. It was the first time people sailed all the way around the Earth. This is called a circumnavigation. Magellan had already traveled to Southeast Asia before. By sailing west this time, he nearly circled the whole world himself. The voyage showed how big the oceans really are. It changed how people understood the map of our world.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who changed how humans understood the world.
Magellan was born in northern Portugal around 1480. His father, Pedro de Magalhães, was a member of the minor nobility.
Magellan eventually wanted to find a new route to the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands. At that time, the Treaty of Tordesillas divided much of the world between Spain and Portugal. Portugal controlled the eastern routes around Africa. Magellan proposed a southwestern passage around the American continent instead. King Manuel I of Portugal refused to support this plan. Consequently, Magellan took his idea to King Charles I of Spain. The Spanish king approved the plan and appointed Magellan as an admiral.
In August 1519, the expedition began with a fleet called the Armada of Molucca. This fleet consisted of five ships and about 270 men. The crew was very diverse, including Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians, French, and Greeks. They carried enough supplies to last for two years. The ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean toward South America. Along the way, they faced many challenges, including storms and mutinies. A mutiny happens when members of a group rebel against their leaders. Magellan had to work hard to maintain control over his captains.
After searching the coast of South America, the fleet found a narrow passage. This path is now known as the Strait of Magellan. Passing through this strait allowed the ships to enter a new, calm sea. Magellan named this body of water the Mar Pacifico, or the Pacific Ocean.
After Magellan's death, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the expedition. The remaining crew members finally reached the Spice Islands. The fleet then split into two groups. One ship tried to sail east, but it was unsuccessful. The other ship, named the Victoria, was led by Elcano. It sailed west across the Indian Ocean and around Africa. The Victoria finally returned to Spain in September 1522. This marked the completion of the first trip around the world.
This voyage had a massive impact on global history. It proved that the oceans were connected and much larger than previously thought. It also showed that the Earth could be traveled by sailing in one direction. Although Magellan died mid-voyage, his leadership made the journey possible. The expedition provided new information about the size and shape of the planet. It remains one of the most significant maritime achievements in human history.
