He is most famous for planning and leading a Spanish expedition from 1519 to 1522. This voyage aimed to reach the East Indies by sailing west. The mission resulted in the first known European crossing of the Pacific Ocean. It also led to the first circumnavigation of the Earth. A circumnavigation is a journey that travels all the way around the globe.

Magellan was born in northern Portugal around 1480. His father, Pedro de Magalhães, was a member of the minor nobility.

As a young man, Magellan served in the Portuguese navy. He spent many years in Asia, visiting places like Goa and Malacca. During these years, he gained great experience as a sailor and naval officer. He even participated in several battles, including the Battle of Diu in 1509. These early years shaped his skills as a navigator.

Magellan eventually wanted to find a new route to the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands. At that time, the Treaty of Tordesillas divided much of the world between Spain and Portugal. Portugal controlled the eastern routes around Africa. Magellan proposed a southwestern passage around the American continent instead. King Manuel I of Portugal refused to support this plan. Consequently, Magellan took his idea to King Charles I of Spain. The Spanish king approved the plan and appointed Magellan as an admiral.

In August 1519, the expedition began with a fleet called the Armada of Molucca. This fleet consisted of five ships and about 270 men. The crew was very diverse, including Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians, French, and Greeks.

They carried enough supplies to last for two years. The ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean toward South America. Along the way, they faced many challenges, including storms and mutinies. A mutiny happens when members of a group rebel against their leaders. Magellan had to work hard to maintain control over his captains.

After searching the coast of South America, the fleet found a narrow passage. This path is now known as the Strait of Magellan. Passing through this strait allowed the ships to enter a new, calm sea. Magellan named this body of water the Mar Pacifico, or the Pacific Ocean.

The crossing of the Pacific was an arduous and difficult task. Eventually, the expedition reached the Philippines. However, Magellan did not finish the journey. He died on 27 April 1521, during the Battle of Mactan.

After Magellan's death, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the expedition. The remaining crew members finally reached the Spice Islands. The fleet then split into two groups. One ship tried to sail east, but it was unsuccessful. The other ship, named the Victoria, was led by Elcano. It sailed west across the Indian Ocean and around Africa. The Victoria finally returned to Spain in September 1522. This marked the completion of the first trip around the world.

This voyage had a massive impact on global history. It proved that the oceans were connected and much larger than previously thought. It also showed that the Earth could be traveled by sailing in one direction. Although Magellan died mid-voyage, his leadership made the journey possible. The expedition provided new information about the size and shape of the planet. It remains one of the most significant maritime achievements in human history.
