Antonio Pigafetta was a Venetian scholar and explorer from Italy.

He is most famous for being the chronicler of the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe. This means he was the person responsible for recording the details of the journey. He joined the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1519. The goal of this mission was to find a western route to the Spice Islands. Pigafetta's detailed writings provide much of the historical knowledge we have today about this massive undertaking.

Pigafetta was born into a prominent noble family in Vicenza, Italy.

His father was Giovanni Pigafetta and his mother was a noblewoman named Lucia. While the exact dates of his birth are unknown, his parents married in March 1492. Pigafetta was a highly educated man who claimed to have read many books. He eventually entered the service of Francesco Chiericati, a papal ambassador. This role led him to the royal court in Spain, where he heard about Magellan's upcoming expedition. He convinced Chiericati that joining the voyage would benefit the Vatican.

In May 1519, Pigafetta traveled to Seville to prepare for the trip. Magellan hired him for a monthly salary of 1,000 maravedís. On the expedition, he used the name Antonio Lombardo. His official role was listed as a servant of the captain and a supernumerary. A supernumerary is a person who is on a ship but does not have a specific assigned duty.

He was assigned to the flagship, the Trinidad, to serve as Magellan's assistant. His primary task was to maintain a diligent daily journal of everything the crew encountered.

As the expedition moved through different regions, Pigafetta recorded vast amounts of data. He documented the geography, the climate, and the natural history of new lands. He was particularly interested in the native inhabitants of the places they visited. He took meticulous notes on their physical appearance and their social customs. He even recorded their languages, creating the first known written document of the Cebuano language. While he was very accurate about observations, he sometimes accepted incredible tales about the lands they saw without question.

The voyage was filled with intense challenges and conflict. In April 1521, the expedition reached the Philippine Islands. During the Battle of Mactan, Magellan was killed. Pigafetta was also wounded during this battle, but he survived his injuries. The expedition continued under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. The journey was incredibly difficult, as some crew members mutinied and returned home early. Out of the approximately 240 men who began the journey, only 18 men completed the full circumnavigation. These 18 survivors returned to Spain in September 1522 aboard the ship Victoria.

After returning to the Republic of Venice, Pigafetta wrote his famous account. He titled it "Report on the First Voyage Around the World."

This work was not a simple linear history. Instead, it was a personal collection of descriptions, translations, and illustrations. His maps were also significant, as one included the first known use of the term "Pacific Ocean" (Oceano Pacifico). Although a writer named Maximilianus Transylvanus published an account in 1523, Pigafetta's journal remains the most detailed source.

His work was later published by the historian Giovanni Battista Ramusio between 1550 and 1559.

Today, historians study several surviving manuscripts and printed books of Pigafetta's work. These include three printed books and four manuscripts, written in both French and Italian. Because the original manuscript was lost, scholars like Andrea da Mosto have worked to create critical editions. These studies help clarify whether the original was written in Italian or a Venetian dialect. Pigafetta's legacy is still honored in many ways. A genus of palms is named after him, and an Italian destroyer ship was named the Antonio Pigafetta in 1931. His life demonstrates how careful observation can preserve history for future generations.
