His personal name was Zhu Zhanji, and he reigned from 1425 to 1435. His rule is often described by historians as a golden age for the dynasty. This era was defined by cultural achievements, political stability, and significant internal reforms. He was the son of the Hongxi Emperor and the grandson of the Yongle Emperor. His leadership helped balance the complex powers of the imperial court during a time of transition.

Zhu Zhanji received a very diverse education during his youth. He studied Confucian literature and government teachings under the guidance of Grand Secretary Hu Guang. Unlike his father, who had frail health, Zhu Zhanji was physically strong. He excelled in military disciplines such as riding and hunting. His grandfather, the Yongle Emperor, noticed this strength and allowed him to join military inspections. In 1414, the young prince even accompanied the Emperor on a campaign against the Mongols.

His early reign was tested by internal and external conflicts. His uncle, Zhu Gaoxu, attempted a coup in September 1425. Zhu Gaoxu believed he was the rightful heir and accused the new emperor of mismanaging the government. The emperor consulted with Grand Secretary Yang Rong and took personal command of a military expedition. A vanguard of 20,000 soldiers led by General Xue Lu besieged the city of Le'an. The imperial army captured the city within one day.

The rebellion was crushed, though the conflict resulted in many executions and deportations.

In addition to this rebellion, the emperor dealt with a war in the region of Đại Việt. This area was then administered as Jiaozhi Province by the Ming. The prolonged conflict eventually ended in a Ming defeat. This outcome allowed for the restoration of Viet independence. Despite these early challenges, the rest of his reign was marked by relative peace. He maintained stable relations with Southeast Asian nations and kept communication open with Korea. In 1432, he also established formal ties with Japan.

Administratively, the Xuande Emperor utilized a sophisticated system of governance. He relied heavily on grand secretaries to review and evaluate imperial decrees. These secretaries would attach recommendations to documents for the emperor to sign. This process allowed for faster and more flexible decision-making within the government. He also attempted to reform the economy by promoting the use of paper money. He wanted to discourage the use of coins and precious metals. However, this effort was unsuccessful, and paper money eventually fell out of circulation.

To help the common people, the emperor addressed the issue of high taxes. In certain areas like Jiangnan, heavy taxes had caused peasants to leave the economy. The Xuande Emperor responded by lowering taxes and sending "grand coordinators" to the provinces. These officials were tasked with stopping corruption among tax collectors. They also assessed the condition of military units to ensure efficiency. At the same time, the influence of eunuchs grew within the palace. While the emperor used them for confidential correspondence, this also led to an increase in their political power.

Beyond politics, the Xuande Emperor was a great patron of the arts. He had a deep passion for poetry, literature, and painting. He was also known for his skill in various games, such as chuiwan, a game similar to golf.
