He had to make many big choices right away. His father wanted to move the capital to Nanjing. However, the new emperor decided to stay in Beijing. He liked Beijing because he grew up there. He also wanted to keep the northern border safe. He chose the name Xuande for his era. This name means "proclamation of virtue."

His early years as leader were not always easy. His uncle, Zhu Gaoxu, tried to take power in a rebellion.

The emperor listened to his advisors and led his own army. He sent 20,000 soldiers to stop the rebellion in September 1425. The imperial army captured the city of Le'an quickly. After this, the emperor brought peace to his lands. He also dealt with a war in the area known as Đại Việt. This war ended with the land gaining its independence.

Life in the empire changed in many ways during his rule.

He tried to use paper money for trade. This plan did not work well in the end. He also worked to help poor farmers by lowering their taxes. He sent "grand coordinators" to stop unfair tax collectors.

These workers checked on military units and local leaders. He also let the explorer Zheng He go on a final voyage. This sea trip happened between 1431 and 1433.
