His real name was Zhu Houzhao. He was born on November 14, 1491. He was the eldest son of the Hongzhi Emperor. As a young prince, he was a very smart student. He studied hard and learned many things. His father even took him on trips to practice riding and archery. This helped him become a skilled athlete. After his father died in 1505, he became the emperor. His era name, Zhengde, meant the rectification of the people's virtue.

Once he took power, the emperor chose a different way to rule. He did not like the old rules of the government. These rules were based on Confucian ideas. He often ignored the high officials called grand secretaries. Instead, he chose to listen to eunuchs. Eunuchs were men who worked closely in the royal court. He grew up with a group called the "Eight Tigers." This group included a very powerful man named Liu Jin. The emperor even moved out of the Forbidden City. He lived in a new place called the Leopard Quarter.

From 1506 to 1510, Liu Jin held much of the power. This was a difficult time for the country. The government faced many hard jobs. They had very little money in the state treasury. Liu Jin used high taxes to find more silver. This made many people very poor. Because of these high taxes, several large rebellions broke out. There was the Prince of Anhua rebellion and the rebellion of 1510. A philosopher named Wang Yangming eventually helped stop the Prince of Ning rebellion.

The emperor had many interests outside of ruling. He loved music, singing, and composing songs. He also enjoyed hunting, wrestling, and watching magic shows. He even liked to walk through the streets of Beijing in disguise. To get more money, he allowed private trade with other lands. This happened just as Portuguese sailors arrived in southern China. In 1517, the emperor went to the northern border. He stayed in a town called Datong. There, he successfully stopped a large raid by the Mongols. This raid was led by a leader named Dayan Khan.

The emperor's life ended in a sad way. In 1519, he traveled to the city of Nanjing. On his way back, he fell into the water while he was drunk. This made him very ill. He died in April 1521. He did not have any children to take his place. A man named Yang Tinghe helped choose the next ruler. With help from the Empress Dowager Zhang, they chose a cousin. This cousin was thirteen years old and named Zhu Houcong. His reign began after the Zhengde Emperor passed away.
