This time is often called a golden age. It was a period of great growth for art and culture. People began to write using Chữ Nôm, which is a special way to write the Vietnamese language. They also started using paper money for the first time in Vietnam. This helped people trade and grow their economy. These changes helped build a strong sense of identity for the people.

The dynasty began through a series of clever moves. Long ago, an ancestor named Trần Kinh moved from Fujian to settle in a village. His grandson, Trần Lý, became a wealthy landowner. The Trần family grew close to the ruling Lý dynasty through marriage. In 1224, a young girl named Lý Chiêu Hoàng became the empress. She was only six years old at the time. A leader named Trần Thủ Độ helped arrange a secret marriage between her and Trần Cảnh. This led to the end of the Lý dynasty and the start of the Trần rule on December 31, 1225.

One of the biggest challenges for the Trần was fighting the Mongols. The Mongols were a huge force that had conquered much of Asia. They launched three different invasions against Đại Việt. In 1257, the first invasion began, but the Trần leaders managed to make peace. The second invasion happened in 1284 under the command of Prince Toghon. It was a very hard time, and some leaders even left the country. However, the Trần army fought back bravely. They won important battles at Hàm Tử and Chương Dương to push the invaders away.

The third Mongol invasion was the most famous. A great general named Trần Quốc Tuấn led the defense. He assured the emperor that the army could win. In 1288, the Trần army achieved a massive victory at the Battle of Bạch Đằng River.

They destroyed the Mongol navy during this fight. Other important generals like Trần Khánh Dư and Phạm Ngũ Lão also helped protect the land. These victories showed how strong the Trần military had become. They even used improved gunpowder to help them expand their territory southward.

Even after the wars, the dynasty faced many hard jobs. There were fights among the family over who should be the next leader. Attacks from the land of Champa also made the dynasty weaker. In 1398, the emperor was forced to give the throne to his young son. By 1400, a minister named Hồ Quý Ly took control. This ended the long rule of the Trần family.

Even though the dynasty ended, their culture and language lived on. The work they did laid a foundation for the future of Vietnam.
