The Trần dynasty was a powerful ruling family in Đại Việt. They governed from 1225 to 1400.

This era is often called a golden age. It was a time of great progress in Vietnamese arts and culture. During this period, the first pieces of Chữ Nôm literature were written. Chữ Nôm is a writing system used for the Vietnamese language. The dynasty also introduced the first use of paper money in Vietnam. These developments helped create a strong sense of Vietnamese identity.

The dynasty's origins began with the migration of Trần Kinh. He moved from Fujian to a village called Tức Mặc in the early 12th century. His grandson, Trần Lý, became a wealthy landowner. The Trần clan grew powerful through strategic intermarriages with the ruling Lý dynasty. In 1224, the Lý dynasty ended its rule with the six-year-old Empress Regnant, Lý Chiêu Hoàng. A powerful commander named Trần Thủ Độ orchestrated a plan to change the leadership. He arranged a secret marriage between the young empress and Trần Cảnh. On December 31, 1225, the Trần dynasty was officially established.

Early rule was marked by efforts to secure the throne. Trần Thủ Độ worked hard to eliminate political opponents from the old Lý family. The first emperor, Trần Thái Tông, took the throne when he was only eight years old. The dynasty faced internal challenges, such as rebellions in the mountainous regions of Bắc Giang and Hải Dương. In 1237, a family dispute occurred when Trần Thủ Độ forced the emperor to take a wife from his own brother. This caused Prince Hoài Trần Liễu to revolt. Eventually, the emperor sought peace as a monk at Yên Tử Mountain. He later returned to his duties after the revolt ended.

One of the most significant aspects of the Trần era was the defense against Mongol invasions. The Mongols were a massive force that had conquered much of Asia. They launched three separate invasions against Đại Việt. The first invasion began in 1257. The Trần leaders initially faced defeats and even sent diplomats to establish a tributary relationship with the Mongol court.

This helped maintain peace for a time. However, the Mongols returned for a second invasion in 1284 under Prince Toghon. This invasion involved both land forces from the north and a navy from the south.

The second Mongol invasion was a period of intense struggle. Some members of the imperial family even defected to the Yuan side. To protect the emperors, Princess An Tư was offered as a diversion for the invading prince. Despite these hardships, the tide turned at the Battle of Hàm Tử in 1285. General Trần Nhật Duật and others helped defeat the Yuan fleet. Shortly after, the Battle of Chương Dương destroyed much of the Yuan navy. These victories allowed Emperor Nhân Tông to return to the capital, Thăng Long.

The third invasion in 1287 was met with great confidence. The commander-in-chief, Prince Hưng Đạo (Trần Quốc Tuấn), assured the emperor of victory.

The most decisive moment occurred at the Battle of Bạch Đằng River in 1288. The Trần army achieved a massive victory by destroying the Mongol navy. Other notable generals included Trần Khánh Dư, who destroyed a logistics convoy, and Phạm Ngũ Lão. The dynasty also used improved gunpowder technology to expand its influence southward. They successfully defeated and vassalized the kingdom of Champa.

In its final decades, the Trần dynasty faced many crises. Successions became unstable, and invasions from Champa weakened the state. In 1398, Emperor Trần Thuận Tông was forced to give his throne to his three-year-old son. By 1400, the minister Hồ Quý Ly forced the young emperor to abdicate. This event ended the Trần dynasty's rule. Despite its end, the period left a lasting legacy. The advancements in language, money, and military defense shaped the future of the region.
