He is best known for finding a direct sea route from Europe to India. This path went around the southern tip of Africa and across the Indian Ocean. His journey was a turning point in world history. It allowed Europeans to trade directly with Asia by sea. This changed how goods moved around the entire world.

His first big voyage began in July 1497. Da Gama led a fleet of four ships from Lisbon, Portugal.

These ships included the São Gabriel and the São Rafael. The ships were large vessels called carracks. The crew included about 170 men. They sailed through the open ocean for over three months without seeing land. This was the longest ocean journey ever made at that time. They even named a part of the coast Natal during the trip.

Before da Gama, many people tried to find this route. Sailors had lost many ships and lives trying to reach the Indies. King John II of Portugal wanted to find a way to reach the spice markets. At that time, most spices were moved across land. This made them very expensive. Other explorers like Bartolomeu Dias had already rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Da Gama's job was to connect those discoveries to India. He finally reached the port of Kozhikode on May 20, 1498.

During the trip, the crew faced many hard moments. In Mozambique, the local people were not friendly to the explorers. In Mombasa, they also met with hostility. However, the port of Malindi in Kenya was much friendlier.

This helped the crew continue their journey toward India. Once they reached India, they found valuable spices like pepper and cinnamon. These spices were very important for trade. Portugal was able to control much of this trade for many years.

Da Gama's success changed the life of his country. Because of his travels, the Portuguese economy grew very large. He was given many honors for his work. In 1519, he was named the Count of Vidigueira. Later, in 1524, he was appointed the Viceroy of India.
