Bartolomeu Dias was a famous Portuguese explorer and sailor.

He lived during a time when people wanted to find new sea paths. His family already knew a lot about the ocean. One of his ancestors, Dinis Dias e Fernandes, explored the African coast long ago. In 1488, Dias did something very important for history. He was the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa. This discovery showed that ships could reach Asia by using the open ocean.

His big voyage began around July 1487 when he left Lisbon. He took three ships with him to explore the African coast. Two were small ships called caravels named São Cristóvão and São Pantaleão. His brother, Diogo, captained a larger supply ship.

Dias also carried stone pillars called padrões to mark the land. He wanted to find a legendary Christian ruler named Prester John. The crew sailed down the coast and passed the Congo River. They even left the supply ship behind to help them later.

In December 1487, the ships reached a place called Walvis Bay. After that, the ships turned away from the land and sailed southwest. Some people think a storm pushed them there. Others think they wanted better winds for sailing. This choice helped them find the southern tip of Africa. On February 4, 1488, they reached Mossel Bay.

By March 12, they reached their furthest point at Kwaaihoek. There, they put up a stone pillar called the Padrão de São Gregório.

The crew was tired and running low on food. They wanted to go home to Portugal. Dias agreed to turn the ships around. On the way back, they saw the Cape of Good Hope in May 1488. Dias first called it the Cape of Storms. King John II later gave it a new name.

They eventually found their supply ship in July. Sadly, some crew members had died in fights with local people. Dias finally returned to Lisbon in December 1488.

Dias helped many other explorers after his famous trip. He helped build the ships that Vasco da Gama used to reach India. In 1500, he was part of a large fleet led by Pedro Álvares Cabral. This fleet was the first to reach Brazil.

However, a massive storm hit near the Cape of Good Hope. Dias lost his ship and died on May 29, 1500. Today, people visit museums to learn about his great journeys.
