He is remembered for his many books and for how he led his people through difficult times. His reign changed how the empire worked and how the church was run.

His early life was quite lonely and difficult. He was the youngest son of Emperor Dawit I. His older brother, Tewodros I, made him a prisoner on Mount Gishan. Because of this, Zara Yaqob spent many years away from other people. He did not have much experience with how to run a country. When he finally became king, he had to deal with many rebellions and enemies. He was a very determined leader who used force to keep control.

Zara Yaqob made many big changes in the Ethiopian Church. He wanted everyone to follow the same religious rules. He even made laws about what people should wear on their foreheads and arms. He worked hard to bring different groups of Christians together. In 1450, he helped reach a compromise at the Council of Debre Mitmaq. This helped bring harmony to the church after many years of disagreement.

He also spent much of his time fighting wars to protect his land. He fought against the Adal Sultanate to keep his empire strong. In 1445, he won a major victory at the Battle of Gomit. This win helped him control the kingdoms in the south. He also sent soldiers to settle in northern areas to keep peace. He even collected tribute from coastal places like Massawa and the Dahlak archipelago.

Zara Yaqob was a builder and a writer too. After seeing a bright light in the sky in 1456, he moved his capital to Debre Berhan. He built many large churches and a big palace there. He also wrote important books in the Ge'ez language. One of his famous books was called Mashafa Berhan, or "The Book of Light."
