First, people make a circular frame from wood. The walls use a lattice of wood pieces. Then, they add poles for the roof. At the top, there is a wooden ring called a crown. In Mongolia, this is called a toono. This crown can be very special. In some families, the crown is passed from father to son.

To keep the home warm, people cover the frame with felt. This felt is made from sheep wool. The thick felt protects people from the cold winter.

Inside, the yurt is often beautiful. People use rugs with special patterns. Some patterns show the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. Other shapes, like the ulzii, stand for long life and happiness. A yurt is more than a tent. It is a symbol of home and history.
