People use these spaces to cook, work, or play. They can even keep animals there.

Courtyards help a home feel good. They bring in light and fresh air. They also help keep a house cool in warm weather. In ancient Rome, homes had a central area called an atrium. This area often had a pool to catch rain. This pool was called an impluvium.

In China, courtyard homes are often built in a square. These homes can have many courtyards. The ones closest to the street are for guests. The inner ones are for family.

Today, architects still use them. They can make a safe place for kids to play. They can also give small groups of people a shared park.
