Courtyard

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A courtyard is a circumscribed area that is open to the sky. It is typically surrounded by a building or a complex of structures. This architectural feature is a fundamental element in both Western and Eastern building patterns. Architects have used courtyards as a traditional feature from ancient times to the contemporary era. The words "court" and "yard" both come from the same root, which means an enclosed space. In university settings, these spaces are often specifically called quadrangles.

The development of the courtyard likely began with the evolution of indoor hearths. In early homes, open fires were kept in a central location. These homes had only a small hole in the ceiling to allow smoke to escape. Over time, these small openings were enlarged. This process eventually led to the development of the centralized open courtyard. This design allows for convective cooling, which is a process where air moves through transition spaces between buildings. This can help cool a house during warm weather.

Courtyards have appeared in various forms across many different cultures. In the ancient Middle East, courtyard houses reflected nomadic influences. Residents relocated activities like cooking and sleeping throughout the year. They did this to accommodate changes in temperature and the position of the sun. In some Islamic cultures, these private spaces allowed women to relax unobserved. In the city of Ur around 2000 BC, two-storey houses were built of fired brick around an open square. These homes placed public and working spaces on the ground floor and private rooms upstairs.

Roman architecture featured a specific type of central area known as an atrium. These one-storey homes were built side by side along streets. They lacked windows and instead took in light from the entrance and the central atrium. The atrium often contained an impluvium, which is a central pool used to collect rainwater. Many Roman homes also included a second open-air area called a garden. This garden was surrounded by Greek-style colonnades, forming a peristyle. This peristyle created a walkway around the perimeter of the courtyard.

In China, the traditional courtyard house is known as a siheyuan. This is an arrangement of several individual houses around a square. Each house belongs to a different family member. Additional houses can be built behind this arrangement to fit more family members. These spaces are designed for privacy and tranquility, often including a garden and a water feature. Some Chinese designs use multiple courtyards to increase privacy. Strangers are received in the outermost courtyard, while the innermost areas are for close friends and family.

The history of the courtyard house is very long. The first courtyard houses appeared around 6000 BC at the Neolithic Yarmukian site of Sha'ar HaGolan. This site is located in the central Jordan Valley on the northern bank of the Yarmouk River. In Europe, the medieval farmhouse is a classic example of a courtyard house. These featured four buildings arranged around a square courtyard with steep, thatched roofs. The central space was used for working, gathering, or keeping small livestock. These structures could even be made defensible to provide protection.

Modern architects continue to find new uses for these spaces in crowded cities. In the United States, courtyard apartment buildings flourished in Chicago between the 1890s and the 1920s. These buildings provided outdoor access and ventilation that earlier multi-unit housing lacked. Today, architects use courtyards to provide privacy and a break from busy life. They can also serve as a safe place for children to play. In San Francisco, "marina style" houses use a central patio. These small courtyards are sometimes covered with glass to provide natural light and space for plants.
