In 2021, people grew 771 million tonnes of it. This makes wheat a very big part of our food. It is a main source of protein for people. Wheat also has gluten. Gluten is a protein that helps food stay together. Some people cannot eat gluten because it makes them sick.

People have grown wheat for a long time. They first farmed it in the Fertile Crescent. This happened a very long time ago.

Early farmers used stone tools to harvest it. They used the seeds to make bread and porridge. They also used the straw from the plant. Straw can be used for fuel or for roofs. Wheat roots can grow very deep in the soil. They can go down as far as two metres. This helps the plant stay alive during dry times.
