Most grains have three parts. These are the bran, the germ, and the endosperm. Refined grains are different. They only keep the endosperm part. Whole grains keep all three parts in the right amounts.

There are many types of grains to eat. You can find wheat, rice, and corn. Other grains include oats, barley, and rye. Some seeds are called pseudocereals. These include quinoa and amaranth. Quinoa and amaranth have high quality protein. This protein is close to the protein found in milk.

Whole grains give us fiber and nutrients. Eating them can help your health. Some groups say they may lower the risk of heart disease. They may also lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. They may even help prevent some types of cancer.

Some people must be careful with grains. Wheat, barley, and rye have gluten. This is a type of protein. People with coeliac disease cannot eat gluten. They must eat a gluten-free diet to stay well. They can often eat pseudocereals instead.
