Whole grain

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A whole grain is a special kind of seed. It comes from cereal plants or pseudocereals. Most grains have three main parts. These are the bran, the germ, and the endosperm. When people make refined grains, they often take parts away. They usually only keep the starchy endosperm. A whole grain keeps all three parts in their natural amounts.

This keeps the grain full of nutrients and fiber.

There are many different kinds of grains to find. Some are common cereals like wheat, rice, and corn. You might eat oats, barley, or rye for breakfast. There are also smaller grains called millets, sorghum, and teff. Some are even called pseudocereals, like buckwheat and quinoa.

These pseudocereals are very special. For example, quinoa and amaranth have high-quality protein. Their protein is close to the protein found in milk.

Eating whole grains can be a healthy choice. They provide carbohydrates and many important nutrients. They also have a lot of dietary fiber. Some groups, like the Danish Whole Grain Partnership, encourage people to eat them. Many scientists believe they can help lower the risk of certain diseases. This includes heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

Some research also shows they may lower the risk of colorectal cancer.

Some people must be very careful with certain grains. Wheat, barley, rye, and oats contain a protein called gluten. For people with coeliac disease, gluten can cause problems. This condition affects about 1% of people in developed countries. They must follow a strict gluten-free diet for their whole lives.

Luckily, they can often eat pseudocereals instead. Other people might have gluten sensitivity or other reactions to these proteins.

It can be tricky to find real whole grains in a store. In the United States, you must check the ingredients list. Some breads are colored brown with molasses to look healthy. They might not actually be whole grain. To be a whole grain product, the parts must be in the right proportions.

In the UK, the term "wholemeal" is often used instead. Always look closely at the labels to see what is inside.
