language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sienna is a warm color from the earth.

It is a type of clay. This clay contains iron. It also has manganese. This makes sienna darker than other earth colors.

Artists use two main kinds of sienna. The first is raw sienna. This is a yellowish-brown color.

The second is burnt sienna. This is a rich, reddish-brown color. Artists make it by heating raw sienna in a fire. This heat changes the clay. The longer it stays in the heat, the deeper the red color becomes.

People have used these colors for a very long time. Humans used them for cave paintings. Ancient Romans also used them. The name comes from the city of Siena in Italy.

Today, we find sienna in many places. It is found in Italy and France. It is also in the Appalachian Mountains. Some paint is made from natural earth. Other paint is made in a lab. You can tell the difference on the label.
