Sienna is a beautiful color that comes from the earth.

It is a type of clay that artists use to paint. This color is special because it contains iron oxide and manganese oxide. The manganese makes sienna look darker than other colors like yellow ochre.

People have used these earth colors for a very long time. You can even find them in very old cave paintings. It is a warm color that helps artists create many different looks.

There are two main ways to use this clay. The first way is called raw sienna. This version is a yellowish-brown color in its natural state.

The second way is called burnt sienna. To make this, artists take lumps of earth and put them in a fire. They might use a shovel or a small container called a crucible. The heat changes the clay into a rich, reddish-brown color.

If the clay stays in the heat longer, the red color becomes even deeper.

This color has a very long history. The ancient Romans used sienna in its natural form. They found it near a place called Arcidosso on Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany.

In the Middle Ages, painters like Duccio di Buoninsegna used these pigments. Duccio worked with earth colors in the late 13th century. The name sienna comes from the Italian city-state of Siena. This is where the pigment was produced during the Renaissance.

Scientists used X-rays to look at his paintings. They found that he used sienna to prepare his canvases. Other famous artists like Caravaggio also used earth colors. In 1760, the name sienna was first recorded in English. Today, you can see sienna on paint tubes. A label marked PY-43 means it is natural raw sienna. A label marked PR-102 means it is natural burnt sienna.

Today, we find sienna in many different parts of the world. The old sources in Italy are almost used up. Now, much of it comes from the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

You can also find it in the Appalachian Mountains. It is also made in a small French town called Bonne Fontaine. Some artists use natural sienna from the ground. Other artists use synthetic sienna made in a lab. Both kinds help people make wonderful art every day.
