Woodstock was a massive music and art festival in 1969.

It was called "an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music." The event took place on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York.

It became a very famous moment in music history. People see it as a peak event for the culture of the 1960s. It even changed how people thought about rock and roll.

The festival worked in a way that no one expected. The organizers planned to sell tickets for $18 in advance. They expected about 50,000 people to arrive at the farm.

However, more than 460,000 people showed up instead! Because they could not build fences or ticket booths in time, it became a free concert. This meant the organizers lost much of their money at first. They later made it back through a famous documentary film and a soundtrack album.

A small group of people started this big project. Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John P. Roberts formed a company called Woodstock Ventures.

At first, they only wanted to build a small recording studio. They changed their plan to host a large concert instead. In April 1969, the band Creedence Clearwater Revival signed the first contract. They agreed to play for $10,000. Once they joined, many other big musical acts signed up too.

Many details make the festival hard to forget. The weather was often cloudy with sudden rain.

This made the fields and roads very muddy for the crowds. There were huge traffic jams on the way to the farm. To help with the sound, an engineer named Bill Hanley built special speaker columns. These were called the "Woodstock Bins." Thirty-two different musical acts performed outdoors on the stage. Jimi Hendrix was the very last performer on Monday morning.

Woodstock connects to many things we know about music today. It was named a top moment in rock history by Rolling Stone magazine. The site is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
