Astral Weeks is a very famous music album by the singer Van Morrison.

It was released in November 1968 by Warner Bros. Records. The music is quite special because it mixes many different styles. It blends folk, blues, jazz, and even classical music together. This was a big change from his earlier pop songs, like "Brown Eyed Girl." Many people now believe it is one of the most important albums in rock history. It has appeared on many lists of the best albums ever made.

Making the album was a very interesting way of working. Morrison did not use written music charts for the players. Instead, he played his songs on an acoustic guitar. He told the musicians to play whatever they felt was right. This allowed the band to jam and play freely. Most musicians were used to following strict rules and written notes. This free style helped the music feel very alive and natural.

Before the album was made, Morrison had a very hard time. He had a legal disagreement with his old record label, Bang Records. This happened after the death of the label's founder, Bert Berns, in late 1967. Because of this, Morrison could not record music for a while. He even had trouble finding work in New York clubs. He eventually moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to perform in local coffee houses. There, he began playing with an acoustic duo to find a new sound.

Morrison recorded the album at Century Sound Studios in New York. He recorded parts of it in September and October of 1968. He worked with a producer named Lewis Merenstein. Merenstein brought in talented jazz musicians to help. These players included Richard Davis on the upright bass. Other musicians were Jay Berliner on guitar, Warren Smith Jr. on percussion, and Connie Kay on drums.

Morrison sang and played guitar in a separate booth during these sessions.

Even though it was not a huge success right away, the album grew in fame. It has had a lasting effect on many listeners and musicians. In November 2008, forty years after it first came out, Morrison played the songs live. He performed all eight songs at the Hollywood Bowl in California. This special performance was later released as Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl. One song on the album is inspired by Cyprus Avenue, a street in Belfast.
