“Danny Boy” is a very famous folk song. It is a song that many people feel a deep connection to. People often play it at funerals to show respect. Some people think the lyrics are a message from a parent to a son. This son might be leaving to go to war. The song carries a lot of feeling and history. It is a piece of music that many cultures share.

Making the song was a special process. An English lawyer named Frederic Weatherly wrote the lyrics in 1910. He first wrote them to a different tune. Later, he matched the words to an Irish melody. This melody is called "Londonderry Air." He had to make the words fit the rhyme and the beat. This way, the words and the music worked perfectly together.

There are many stories about how the song came to be. One story says Weatherly's sister-in-law, Margaret Enright Weatherly, sent him the Irish tune in 1913. She lived in Colorado in the United States. Another story says she sang the tune to him in 1912. A third story says she set the poem to the music herself. She had heard the melody as a child in California. It was played by her father and other Irish workers.

The history of the music goes back even further. A woman named Jane Ross collected the melody in the mid-19th century. She heard it from a musician in Limavady. Many famous singers have recorded the song since then. Ernestine Schumann-Heink made the very first recording in 1915. In 1940, Glenn Miller and His Orchestra released a popular version. That version even climbed to number 17 on the pop memory charts.

Many artists have added their own ideas to the song. In 1918, Percy Grainger adapted the tune for a wind ensemble. The singer Harry Belafonte changed the lyrics in 1957. He wanted to send a message against war. He spoke about young men fighting for Ireland's freedom. Even the Beatles included a small part of the song in a concert. It is a song that keeps changing with every new singer.
