He recorded it in New York in 1968. The music is very special. It mixes many styles like folk, jazz, and blues. This was very different from his earlier pop hits.

Morrison wanted a free and natural sound. He worked with many talented jazz musicians. He let them play what they felt. He did not use written music charts. Instead, he played his songs on a guitar. The musicians then played along with him. This made the music feel very alive.

At first, the album was not a big hit. Many people did not know about it. But over time, people began to love it. They loved his singing and his songs. Now, many people call it one of the best albums ever. It has even inspired many other musicians. Forty years later, Morrison played all the songs live. He did this at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008.
