The band grew and changed as members joined or left. Marty Balin started the group in March 1965. He wanted a band that played folk rock. He even opened a club called the Matrix for them to play. Paul Kantner joined Balin to help build the group. They first hired Signe Toly Anderson to sing. Later, Grace Slick joined the band. Her powerful voice helped them become very successful.

Building the band took many steps and several years. In the beginning, they played acoustic folk music. They slowly moved toward an electric sound. This new way of playing mixed folk, blues, and rock. Jorma Kaukonen joined as the lead guitarist. He was won over by a special guitar sound. This sound came from a tape delay device. It was used at Acid Test parties. Even the band name was a bit silly. It came from a nickname for Kaukonen.
