The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, often called Woodstock, was a massive music festival in 1969.

It was billed as "an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music." The event took place from August 15 to 18 on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York. It attracted more than 460,000 people to a single site. This festival became a defining moment for the baby boomer generations. It is widely seen as the peak musical event reflecting the 1960s counterculture.

The festival began as a business plan for a recording studio. Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John P. Roberts formed Woodstock Ventures in January 1969. Initially, they hoped to build a small studio in Woodstock, New York. Instead, Roberts and Rosenman proposed a large concert featuring popular artists. The organizers faced many challenges during the planning process. They struggled to find a suitable venue after several sites were rejected. Eventually, they leased land in Wallkill, but local laws made it impossible to host the event there.

Finding a home for the music was a difficult process. The organizers finally settled on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel. This land featured a natural bowl that sloped down toward Filippini Pond. The stage was set up at the bottom of this hill. The organizers originally expected only about 50,000 attendees. They planned to sell advance tickets for $18 and gate tickets for $24. However, the massive influx of people prevented them from installing fences or ticket booths. Consequently, the event transformed into a free concert for the crowds.

The music was supported by a massive and complex sound system. Sound engineer Bill Hanley designed a system to reach the huge audience. He built special speaker columns on the hills to spread the sound. These were known as the "Woodstock Bins." The system used large marine plywood cabinets that weighed half a ton each. These enclosures carried four JBL D140 loudspeakers inside. Behind the stage, three transformers provided 2,000 amperes of current. This power was necessary to run the large amplification setup.

Thirty-two different musical acts performed outdoors during the three days. The weather was often overcast and included sporadic rain. This rain turned the fields and roads into thick mud. The large crowds faced challenges with food shortages and poor sanitation. Despite these difficult conditions, the festival remained remarkably peaceful. Security was managed by 346 off-duty New York City police officers. Personnel from Stewart Air Force Base also helped to maintain order. They even used helicopters to fly performers in and out of the site.

One of the most famous moments happened on Monday morning. Jimi Hendrix was the final performer to take the stage. He performed a two-hour set with his band, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. This group was also known as a "Band of Gypsies." During his set, he played a psychedelic version of the national anthem. By this time, the crowd had decreased to about 30,000 people. Many people had stayed specifically to catch a glimpse of him. His performance became a major part of the 1960s cultural identity.

Woodstock had a lasting impact on history and popular culture. While the organizers faced near bankruptcy from the free concert, they recovered through media. An Academy Award-winning documentary film and a soundtrack album were released in 1970. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Woodstock as number 19 among the 50 moments that changed rock and roll. The festival site was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
