It was called Woodstock. The festival was held on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in New York.

Organizers wanted to share peace and music. They expected about 50,000 people to come. Instead, more than 460,000 people arrived! Because so many people came, the event became a free concert. The organizers could not build fences or ticket booths in time.

The weather was not always good. Rain fell and made the fields very muddy.

There were also big traffic jams. Even with these hard parts, the festival was peaceful. Thirty-two musical acts played on the stage. Jimi Hendrix was the last person to perform. He played a two-hour set on Monday morning.

Woodstock was a very important moment in music history. It was even listed as a major moment for rock and roll. Today, the site is on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a place worth protecting for the future.
