life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The wobbegong is a fascinating type of shark. It belongs to the carpet shark family, Orectolobidae. These sharks are known for their bold skin patterns. These markings look just like a colorful rug.

This special look helps them hide on the sea floor. Because they blend in so well, people call them carpet sharks. They are very important parts of their ocean homes.

These sharks use a clever way to hunt. They are ambush predators that wait for food to come to them. First, they rest on the bottom of the ocean. They use camouflage to hide among rocks and sand. Small, weed-like growths called whisker lobes surround their jaws. These lobes help them blend in even better. When a fish swims too close, the shark uses its powerful jaws. It has many needle-like teeth to grab reef fish and other sharks.

Scientists have studied these sharks for a long time. The name wobbegong comes from an Australian Aboriginal language. It means "shaggy beard." This name describes the growths around their mouths. There are 12 different species of wobbegong alive today. They belong to three different groups called genera. These groups are Eucrossorhinus, Orectolobus, and Sutorectus.

Many wobbegongs live in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans. You can find them around Australia and Indonesia. One species, the Japanese wobbegong, lives as far north as Japan. Most wobbegongs stay relatively small. However, the spotted wobbegong and banded wobbegong can grow to 3 meters long.

Some species, like the Indonesian wobbegong, are near threatened. This means their numbers are going down. Other species, like the tasselled wobbegong, are doing well.

Most wobbegongs are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They have a slow metabolism. This means their bodies use energy very slowly. Because of this, they only need to eat about twice a week. Some people keep small species in home tanks. The tasselled wobbegong and Ward's wobbegong are popular choices. They are lethargic, so they do not move around much.

However, they might still eat their tankmates! While they are not usually dangerous, they can bite humans if they are touched.
