He was even famous for playing the character Werner. He worked hard to bring real Shakespearean words back to the stage. This was a big change from older versions of the plays.

His journey into acting began because of his family. He was born in London in 1793. His father, William Macready the Elder, was also an actor. William went to Rugby School and was the head boy there. He originally wanted to go to the University of Oxford. However, his father had money problems with his theaters in 1809. This meant William had to help manage the theaters instead.

Macready traveled to many different places during his life. He performed in the United States and in Paris. In 1849, he went to America for another tour. This trip included a very difficult event called the Astor Place Riot. During this riot, between 22 and 31 people died. More than 120 people were also injured in the trouble. This was a very hard time for him and his work. He eventually retired from the stage in 1851.

We can still see his legacy in many ways today. A theatre in Rugby is named after him. There is even a bronze tablet at his old home in Cheltenham. A famous actor named Frank Barrie even made a play about him. This play was performed in 65 different countries. Macready died in 1873 and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. He remains a very important part of theater history.
