Forrest worked very hard to become a star. He traveled to new cities like Cincinnati and New Orleans to perform.

In these places, he often acted in simple halls with poor scenery. This tough work helped him learn how to be a great professional. He eventually became very successful in New York City. In 1826, he played a famous role called Othello at the Bowery Theatre. He was known for being a man of honor who kept his word. Even when he could have made more money, he finished his contracts.

Forrest also wanted to help American writers succeed. From 1828 to 1847, he held a contest for new plays.

The only rule was that the main character had to fit his acting style. These plays often focused on American themes. Some winners included the plays *Metamora* and *The Gladiator*. These stories helped his career because they matched his strong voice and body. His contest helped many new American playwrights gain a good reputation.

His life was sometimes filled with big conflicts. He had a famous rivalry with a British actor named William Macready. This disagreement led to the Astor Place Riot in May 1849.

About 10,000 people gathered in the streets of New York City. During this riot, dozens of people died and many others were injured. Forrest also went through a very public and difficult divorce. He even got into a fight with a writer named Nathaniel Parker Willis. These events were talked about by thousands of people in the news.

Even when things were hard, Forrest kept performing. In 1860, he played Hamlet and had one of his best successes. Later, he faced a painful illness called gout. This sickness made it very hard for him to walk or use his hand. He still went on a tour in 1871 to visit his home town. He traveled through many places like Cincinnati and New Orleans. He continued to act until the very end of his life in 1872.
